Back to the grind…

Well folks, break is over and school is back in session. After not doing much for a while I was ready to get back to it. If you know me, you know that I am a total bookworm. Being the only girl with three brothers, much of my childhood was spent in bed or corner nooks with my nose in a book, a favorite was Calvin and Hobbes. Even now, reading is still one of my favorite past times. There’s nothing quite like getting lost in another world.

So I’m really  excited to be taking a bookmaking class this quarter. Seems like an unnecessary skill, right? Not in my book! Haha, get it? See what I did there?

Aaaaanyways…..

I’m working on putting together my portfolio and I thought it would be cool to make a book out of it. Today we got the chance to examine some truly amazing books, some could even be works of art. It definitely gave me a couple ideas. Here are a couple shots:

Paris Je T’aime

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what I’m doing with my life and what I want it to be etc. I’ll be graduating from grad school soon so that means the adult world is quickly approaching. Eeeekk!!!! Half of me thinks I should buckle down and get a real job, basically grow up. But, the other half wants to travel and see the world, experience new things while I can before real life can get in the way. The best possible scenario would be to get a job overseas, Paris preferably. I’m dreaming of course. Excuse me while I go back to dreaming…..*sigh*

Loving this quote I found in a book about CoCo Chanel.

Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel

I cannot wait to see this documentary about Diana Vreeland, past fashion editor of Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue and undoubtedly one of the most influential women of the twentieth century.

Some of my favorite quotes by her:

“You don’t owe prettiness to anyone. Not to your boyfriend/spouse/partner, not to your co-workers, especially not to random men on the street. You don’t owe it to your mother, you don’t owe it to your children, you don’t owe it to civilization in general. Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked ‘female’.”

“Too much good taste can be boring”

“There’s only one very good life and that’s the life you know you want and you make it yourself.”

“Style is everything…style is a way of life. Without it, you’re nothing.”

People & Textiles: The Ties That Bind

This is a short video I’ve been working on this past fall for The Global Skin video competition. It explores how clothing reflects one’s identity, how fashion and textiles connect us all, and what role sustainability plays in the industry today. It was a really fun experience working with a new medium and meeting new people. Enjoy!

Letting Go…

I’ve always been a bit of a shopaholic..who am I kidding? I am totally a shopaholic. However, this year I made an effort to be a more conscious consumer and think more before I buy. Asking myself whether I really needed something, or am I buying it just because it’s on sale has definitely made a difference. So, this Thanksgiving I decided to go through my closet and get rid of things I don’t wear anymore. And, boy did I have a LOT to get rid of. I never realized how much I had until I went through and took inventory of everything. It was actually kind of nice to rediscover things I had forgotten about. But, it was equally horrifying to see how much I bought and never really wore.

In the end, it was painful to let some things go but also satisfying.

After all, it’s just STUFF.

This is such a cool video. I love the bare banjo music playing and how this was shot. I’m also a fan of seeing how things are made so seeing the letterpress process is awesome.

The Way I Dress: Mr. Waris Ahluwalia

The Way I Dress is a video series I recently came across while doing research for my own video project. They are by Chris Floyd and feature stylish men from different fields. I like how simple yet well done they are. It is basically just a look at how people get dressed and what influences their style choices. My favorite one so far is of Waris Ahluwalia, an actor and designer. I mean, the man has a valet to help him get dressed. Talk about swag.
